Scratching the Surface:
A Sgraffito Workshop with Nathan Gwirtz
Saturday August 23rd 9am-3pm | $200 per person includes lunch and firing
In this six hour workshop (including lunch) we will explore expression on pottery through the ceramic surface technique of sgraffito: decoration produced by scratching through a surface layer to reveal a different color underneath. We’ll discuss approaches to design and decoration, as well as cover materials, tools, and technique. We will get hands on with techniques including: underglazing, carving, and illustration on leather hard pottery (you are asked to bring at least one of your own pieces to decorate).
Required Supplies:
Pottery: trimmed, leather hard (more moist than dry), ^6 white clay (1-2 pieces - not larger than 14” in any direction)
Imagery: printed or sketched illustrations (3-5)
Brush: 1 inch wash (such as 1 Inch Economy Hake with Metal Ferrule)
Suggested Carving tool: Kemper K23 Cleanup Tool
Suggested Carving tool: small loop tool(s) (such as the Kemper M series Kemper PTM20 M Series or Diamond Core Fine Point series FP4 Fine Point Javelin Carving Tool)

Small all level wheel throwing classes in our adjoining studio. Sessions are six weeks, two hours per class.
$300 class fee includes all instruction, materials, open studio hour, and firings. Just bring yourself and an apron (if you want!)
Students will be guided on an individual basis according to skill level, so no previous experience is necessary. Small intimate class sizes mean more one on one attention and the ability to focus on starting or advancing your practice, plus getting to know your classmates!
